Excerpt from Bargello Knits

The inspiration for this design was completely practical. I needed a project for the book that served as an example of bargello knitting with lace and texture using a long color change yarn. The design elements presented themselves over time—first to arrive was the stitch pattern with its 16 stitches of knit/purl texture and a splash of lace. I added it to my collection of perfect-for-bargello-knitting stitch patterns. The yarn, which I found at the lovely little Yarn Garden of Whittier, had not even been unpacked from its shipment when I bought all of it. Some time later the elegant silhouette and bracelet-length sleeves appeared in ready-to-wear fashion—and I was able to pull the whole thing together.

Pattern notes
This project uses standard sweater construction with set-in sleeves. The front and back sections begin with the segments in working position for the cast on. In contrast, the sleeves utilize a provisional cast on so the stitches can be picked up later for the edge treatment. The sleeve edging and neckline are worked in an abbreviated version of the main pattern stitch with a single strand of yarn.
