Designed especially for a single 100g skein of 4ply gradient-dyed ombre yarn, but can be made with two balls of contrasting colour if preferred. If made with two separate colours, the blending effect at the bottom of the cowl will be lost. It is best to avoid complex gradients with many colours, so that the merging tones can be more clearly seen as you progress through the knit. (Another similar cowl design in my store is TropiCowl which features a hibiscus flower motif).

Wind your yarn into a single centre-pull cake, and work from both ends of the cake at once, throughout. No need to cut the yarn or try to guess how much each half will use.

The autumn leaf motif is worked with stranded colourwork and uses the most contrasting parts of the gradient. The simple varying-width stripe arrangement adds a pop of interest to the lower section as the gradient edges start to blend into each other.

Uses approx 350-380yd (100g) of 4ply dyed into an ombre gradient blend, or, two contrasting colours approx 50g of each. You will need a 3mm and 3.5mm circular needle, a stitch marker, and a blunt tapestry needle. Finished size after blocking measures 25cm across the top edge, 10cm down the colourwork section, and 40cm along the increase edge. Bottom opening width is approx 50cm. All measurements taken when laid flat.
