ABOUT
The medieval gowns of songs and legends are famous for their finery. Goldwork, embroidery and precious gems elevated sleek silhouettes and put masterful craftsmanship on display. In that spirit, the Avalon Sweater uses trompe-l’œil cabling and textured stitches in contrasting yarn colors to mimic these ancient crafts, and to delicately frame the neck, arms and hips.
CONSTRUCTION
The Avalon Sweater is worked from the bottom-up and in the round. Beginning with a cabled and ribbed hip detail, the bodice is then shaped at the sides, tapered through the waist, then increased again to accommodate the bust. Stitches are cast off at the underarms, and from this point, the front and back pieces are worked flat as two separate pieces with additional shaping. Once straps are joined at the shoulder, a neckline detail repeats the cabled detail in a contrasting yarn. Stitches are picked up around the armholes and shaped over the shoulder. A contrasting cuff sits at the upper arm, below which the sleeves taper to the wrist and flare out over the fingers.
