Designed in collaboration with The Knitting Shed using their Classic Sock yarn in a low contrast colour
combination, the Axminster Shawl is our first mosaic knitting pattern. It is a crescent shawl, knit from tip to tip,
with a lace border that is knit as you go. The wings of the shawl use a simple slip stitch pattern while a more
intricate mosaic design is used for the centre section.
Information
Yarn: 2 x 100g fingering weight yarn in 2 colours.
Sample used Ainsworth & Prin Classic Sock (80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon 4ply – 100g/365m) in Yarn A
Winter Storm and Yarn B Plush.
Needles: US 4/ 3.5mm or needles to get gauge
Gauge: 31 sts and 44 rows to 4”/10 cm in slipped stitch pattern blocked
Measurements: 13.5”/ 34 cm deep; 66”/168 cm wingspan
Notions: Removeable markers to mark section changes, tapestry needle.
Construction
The crescent shape is created using different rates of increase and decreases throughout the shawl. Because of this method of construction, it is possible to create a large crescent shawl without having 100’s of stitches on your needles.
