A bright and squishy baby blanket with a bold and sunny motif. The sun graphic is framed by edging that includes simple lace and a Latvian braid. The stripes give a motivating sense of progress as you work.

The intarsia and braid techniques are straightforward and explained in detail with accompanying charts and pictures.

I am very happy to say that Rohrspatz & Wollmeise will make kits available in Twin and Pure soft, lovely and washable yarns available in fabulous colors.

At the target gauge, the following yarn quantities are needed for Twin:

Safran (orange/amber): 200 yds (180 m) 60 g
So long kitty (hot pink): 190 yds (175 m) 60 g
Zarte Knospe (spring green): 165 yds (155 m) 50 g
Meilenstein (medium purple): 155 yds (145 m) 50 g
Kornblume (bright blue): 150 yds (135 m) 45 g
Petersilie (parsley green): 145 yds (135 m) 45 g
Lavendel (dark purple): 120 yds (110 m) 35 g
Kakao (cocoa): 90 yds (80 m) 30 g
Natur (undyed): 75 yds (70 m) 25 g
Olio vergine (gold): 60 yds (55 m) 20 g

Kits are available from Rohrspatz & Wollmeise in both Pure and Twin.

For Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Pure Merino, at the target gauge, the following yarn quantities are needed to knit in the colorway shown:

Vamp (red): 205 yds (185 m) 55 g
Safran (orange/amber): 195 yds (175 m) 50 g
So long kitty (hot pink): 185 yds (170 m) 50 g
Zarte Knospe (spring green): 165 yds (150 m) 45 g
Meilenstein (medium purple): 155 yds (140 m) 40 g
Kornblume (bright blue): 145 yds (135 m) 40 g
Petersilie (parsley green) 145 yds (130 m) 40 g
Lavendel (dark purple): 120 yds (110 m) 45 g
Kakao (cocoa): 85 yds (80 m) 25 g
Natur (undyed): 75 yds (70 m) 20 g
Olio vergine (gold): 60 yds (55 m) 15 g

Other Wollmeise Birdie kits could also work, for example combining Arielle, Avatar or Aquamarin with Ayurveda (plus some natural white for the lace edge). You would need to revisit how the colors are distributed to the stripes, but the Birdie kits contain gorgeous colors, so it would work out!

The total weight of Twin for the colors inside the circle is 270 g, and in the frame 190 g (this includes the colors used in the two borders, but not the natural white yarn). In Pure - 240 g and 165 g (plus the natural white yarn).

Notes on yarn quantities and gauge:

  • The calculations for the yarn amounts above were done in grams and meters and converted to yards, then each was rounded up to the nearest 5.

  • If you knit more loosely than the target gauge on the suggested needle size, please adjust your needle size to achieve the target gauge, or the yarn quantities might not be enough.

  • The pattern specifies stitch counts, so to achieve a larger blanket, use a heavier yarn. A sport weight or DK yarn will result in a toddler sized blanket. I have included a detailed how-to page on yarn substitution, if you would like to use a different yarn. Also, feel free to message me if you would like help with this.

This pattern was expertly tech edited by Rachael Prest, who tightened the language and layout considerably, and test knit by Saccade. A huge thank you to both!
