Typo in the pattern corrected 29th Jan 2011: in the instructions for the Right Front, “K2tbl” should read “K2tog tbl”

Modelled by Charlie, four weeks old, and weighing about 8.5 lbs. There’s still a fair bit of growing room left.

The cardigan is knitted in (almost) one piece, starting with the fronts then knitting up and over the shoulders and down the back. The front bands, the sleeves and the cuffs are knitted along with the main piece, so there is very little sewing up and absolutely NO picking up stitches!

Size: To fit Newborn to 3 months

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS in inches:
Chest: 16
Length: 8 ¼
Sleeve length from underarm: 5 ½

Sirdar Snuggly Baby DK, or any baby yarn to give correct gauge/tension
250 yds / 215 m
Finished garment weighs 65g

3.00mm knitting needles
3.75mm knitting needles
I used 24” circulars, but straight needles are OK

Tension: 24 sts and 36 rows = 4 inches in stocking stitch with 3.75mm needles

It’s essential to check your tension/gauge, as this is a slightly firmer fabric than normal for double knitting yarn. As there are no seams around the shoulders, a tighter tension helps to stop the cardigan stretching out of shape.

  • Proud grandma alert: the last photo is Charlie on his 8th birthday, he was the baby model in the first photo :)
