Sweet Baby Blanket with Shell Stitch – Perfect as a Baby Shower Gift
SKILLS REQUIRED
Chain stitch (ch)
Single crochet (sc)
Double crochet (dc)
Slip stitch (sl st)
For the border also:
Half double crochet (hdc)
MATERIALS NEEDED
4.5 mm crochet hook – for example a Clover Amour 4.5 mm hook (or the full set – you won’t regret it). For a lighter and more airy blanket, you can use a 5.0 mm or 5.5 mm hook instead. Additionally, a 3.0 mm or 3.5 mm hook for the decorative cord.
Merino wool yarn in your desired color. I used approximately 500 grams with a yardage of 175 m / 50 g.
A small amount of cotton yarn for the decorative cord. You may also choose to crochet the entire blanket in regular cotton yarn. This will result in a slightly heavier blanket with more defined stitch texture. Please be mindful of the blanket’s weight if it is intended for very small babies.
SIZES
Baby blanket sizes vary greatly, and you can easily adjust it to suit your needs. Consider whether the blanket is intended for a stroller, as a cozy wrap, or for floor play.
My finished blanket measures:
Without border: 70 x 90 cm (27.5 x 35.5 inches)
With border: 75 x 95 cm (29.5 x 37.5 inches)
GAUGE
Gauge is not crucial for this project, as the blanket will simply turn out slightly larger or smaller depending on your tension. Instead, I recommend measuring your foundation chain to achieve your desired width from the beginning.
