For standard and Passap machines, use fingering weight yarn that gets 7 stitches/inch at about stitch size 7 on Japanese or 6 on Passap machines. For mid-gauge and bulky machines, use worsted weight yarn that gets 4 stitches/inch at stitch size 4-5 on bulky or 5-8 on mid-gauge machines.
