What is a bad witch?
We can certainly agree that doing malicious harm to other people, like eating Hansel or Gretel, would be bad. No doubt. Nevertheless, in the historical context, the majority of people who were put on trial and accused of being “bad witches” were merely framed for their boldness, protection, and willingness to challenge authorities or establish boundaries. Or maybe one simply was independent or in the way.

Maybe we do need more “bad witches” today!
So this hat is for a modern archetype of a bold and boundary­setting, assertive version of a witch. Let’s remember that some norms and society’s expectations need to be challenged, because they are unfair, unjust or not healthy for your soul. Knit the hat as a nifty act of rebellion!

It is your choice!
Be a “bad witch” or a “good witch”, the hat offers both versions. Change the message by mood, but not because someone else is trying to frame you.

Sizes:
52/54, 54/56, 56/58, 58/60, or 60/62.

These sizes correspond to standard adult hat XS to XL. XS may also fit teenagers. And of course the “Bad Witch” hat refers to the gender­neutral use of the word witch!

Materials:
DK Yarn in two contrasting colours:
up to 190 m of the main colour
up to 75 m of the contrasting colour

Gauge of 22 stitches by 27 rounds (per 4”/10cm) for colour work in stockinette in the round after blocking. When in doubt, go for 21 stitches rather than 23!

For the swatch, you’ll need another 75m – about 50 meters in the main colour of the swatch and about 25 meters in the contrasting colour of the swatch (per piece). I swapped main and contrasting colour for the swatch, so it matches the brim. If you knit two of these, you’ll have matching wrist warmers. The swatch has the message “be bold, be brave, be you”.

What else do you need?
For the cast­on you will need either a cable system with stoppers or a stitch wire (available in craft stores in the knitting supplies section).
Two circular knitting needles: one in size US 3‒6 / 3‒4mm for the solid coloured part and another one in US 3­7 / 3.25‒4.5 for the colourwork.
Length: either 40’’‒50’’ / 100‒120cm for Magic Loop technique or 20’’ / 50cm with short(!) needle tips.

Round marker, 3 repeat markers (optional), tapestry needle and scissors.

Bad Witch? Böse Hexe:r? Was ist das eigentlich?
Klar ist es verwerflich, anderen Menschen absichtlich Schaden zuzufügen. Hänsel oder Gretel zu essen, geht gar nicht. Zweifellos. Jetzt ist es allerdings so, dass im historischen Kontext die meisten Menschen, lediglich aufgrund ihres Mutes, ihres (friedlichen) Widerstands gegen Autoritäten und ihrer Bereitschaft, Grenzen zu setzen, als „böse Hexe:r“ angeklagt und verurteilt wurden. Oder vielleicht war jemand ein­fach nur unabhängig oder im Weg. Wer war da denn böse?
Das Problem heißt: Framing!

Vermutlich brauchen wir heutzutage mehr “Bad Witches”!
Das englische “witch” ist übrigens genderneutral! Und so ist diese Mütze für den modernen Archetyp ei­ ner mutigen, selbstbewussten und Grenzen setzenden “Bad Witch”. Diese Mütze steht dafür, dass ge­ wisse Normen und gesellschaftliche Erwartungen hinterfragt werden müssen, wenn sie unfair, ungerecht oder schädlich für unsere seelische Gesundheit sind. Stricke die Mütze als selbstbewusstes Symbol der Rebellion!

Du hast die Wahl!
“Bad Witch” oder “Good Witch”, die Wendemütze bietet beide Schriftzüge. Wechsele die Message ganz nach Deiner Laune – nicht weil Andere von außen das so bestimmen. Das Framing muss ein Ende haben!

Größen
52/54, 54/56, 56/58, 58/60, oder 60/62 stricken, was den Standardhutgrößen XS bis XL entspricht.
XS passt vermutlich auch Teenagern.

Die gängigen Stricktechniken sind beschrieben und erklärt. Zwei seltenere Techniken werden per Video gezeigt. Dafür gibt es Links – und zusätzlich jeweils einen QR­Code (falls Du die Anleitung ausdruckst, die Charts gibt es auch extra zum Ausdrucken und Zusammenkleben).

Wolle und Maße:
DK­Garn in zwei kontrastierenden Farben, Maschenprobe von 22 Maschen auf 27 Runden auf 10 x 10 cm. Im Zweifel eher in Richtung 21 Maschen, als in Richtung 23!

Von der Hauptfarbe benötigst Du bis zu 190 m, von der Kontrastfarbe bis zu 75 m.

Bei der Maschenprobe habe ich Haupt­ und Kontrastfarbe vertauscht, damit sie zum Umschlag der Müt­ze passt. Pro Stück kommen noch mal ca. 75 m Verbrauch dazu – ca. 50 m Hauptfarbe der Maschen­ probe und ca. 25 m Kontrastfarbe der Maschenprobe. Wenn Du zwei davon strickst, hast Du passende Handgelenkwärmer mit der Botschaft “be bold, be brave, be you”.

Was brauchst Du noch?
Für den Anschlag:
entweder ein Seilsystem mit Stoppern oder ein Maschenhalterseil (gibts im Bastelladen beim Strickzubehör, engl. heißt es stitch wire),

Zwei Rundstricknadeln:
in Stärke 3‒4 mm
für den Musterteil eine zweite, eine halbe Nadelstärke höher, Stär­ke 3,25‒4,5 mm, je nachdem, wie fest/locker Du strickst.

Länge der Rundstricknadeln: entweder 100‒120 cm für Magic­Loop­Technik oder 50 cm und kurze (!) Nadelspitzen.
Dann noch einen Rundenmarkierer und drei Rapportmarkierer als Zählhilfe, eine stumpfe Sticknadel zum Vernähen und eine Schere.
