The BAG (Braid and Garter) hat is a warm and squooshy hat that knits up quickly and is great for charity giving. The basic hat is made up of Latvian Braids, alternating with garter stitch ridges, but there is room for almost limitless variations!

Latvian Braid is a twining stitch that creates horizontal “arrows” and is traditionally used as a border in knitting (think hat brims and mitten cuffs). It is made up of only three rows, and unlike most traditional twined knitting, the yarns twist and then untwist while you knit — you don’t have to do any untwisting, the yarn does all the work!

This pattern includes a how-to section and hints for first time Latvian Braiders, along with links to on-line support for learning the Latvian Braid technique.

The hat is very stretchy, and will fit a wide range of head sizes, from child to adult. Alternate sizing information is available in the variations section.

You’ll need one Main Color and one Contrasting Color, with slightly more of the Main Color yarn than the Contrasting Color.

This pattern has been graciously test knit by really awesome knitters!

A huge thank you to clairvoyance for her amazing design and layout skills!
