This pattern has been professionally tech edited by the team at Knitting Magazine. It has been test knit by lots of lovely folks on ravelry. Thank you all!

The perfect wrap for all the tiny dancers in your life! This elegant and practical wrap is just right for ballet classes. It also looks so sweet paired with a spring or summer dress. And hello flower girls - a short sleeved version in the bride’s wedding colours would be lovely.

Intermediate knitters will love the hatch stitch edging detail and the vintage-style yarn over increases. Entirely seamless and knit in one piece from the top down, this will fly off the needles. The wrap is easily adjustable by fastening the ties, so sizing is a breeze.

Sizing
3m (6m, 12m, 18m, 24m // 4y, 6y, 8y, 10y)
To fit chest: 16” (17”, 18”, 19”, 20” // 23”, 25”, 26.5”, 28”) / 41 (43, 46, 47, 51 // 58, 64, 67, 71) cm
Designed to fit with 0-2cm negative ease when closed at front and tied.
To ensure an accurate fit, measure the child and choose a size that matches their chest rather than their age. Adjust length of body as needed, using the schematic.

Yarn
Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, 3 (3, 3, 3, 3 // 4, 4, 4, 4) balls, shown in Candy Pink 006.
Or sport weight yarn in the following quantities:
280 (300, 315, 335, 370 // 405, 440, 465, 490) metres
305 (330, 345, 365, 405 // 445, 480, 510, 535) yards

Variations
How about working one with buttons instead of a tie?
Longer or shorter sleeves?
The hatch stitch edging looks great in variegated yarns!
Omit the eyelet increases if you prefer a less lacy vibe.
Replace the knitted ties with satin ribbons for a more dressy look.

Construction

  1. Beginning with a provisional cast on, a foundation strip of hatch stitch edging is worked in both directions. This ensures that the edging is mirrored down the fronts of the wrap.
  2. Stitches are then picked up from this strip and the wrap is worked seamlessly in one piece, from the top down. Stitches are held on waste yarn for the sleeves.
  3. Stitches are cast on at the front corners of the garment to knit the left and right side ties separately. These are then joined, creating a space for one tie to pass through the wrap.
  4. Yarn is then rejoined to knit the ¾-length sleeves, which are worked from the top down.
