The overall designs incorporated in these gauntlets, are based on Norwegian gloves from Selbu and draw further inspiration from fencing gauntlets through the ages. The chevron design on the fingers echo the finger plates and knuckle risers of 15th Century German Gothic Knights’ gauntlets. The crosses on the palm reflects the texture often found on the palm fencing gauntlets to improve the grip. Since both chevrons and crosses are both traditional Selbu motifs, this brings the design elements full circle.

The gloves are knitted in the round and require knowledge of two colour knitting technique, especially Fair Isle. The wrist band involves cabling and I-cords.

The pattern is a combination of written and charted and the measurements are given in a schematic.

Since the gloves are ornate, they would be best worn as an accent. As a bonus, the lined cuffs keep your wrists cosy – fantastic with capes.

Materials one 50g ball of each shade.
