This hat has a double thick band around the ears for extra warmth. It is very easy to knit in worsted weight yarn on a size 7, 16” circular needle. It takes approximately 180 yards, but can be easily striped at any point to use up odds and ends.

Pattern includes instructions for making either a dome-shaped top, or the old-fashioned pointed top. Make and add a pompom if desired to the dome-shaped option. Size medium/large fits most heads!

You can easily create your own design once you have the basic ear band folding technique. Just remember that your first 20 rows will end up tucked inside the hat as part of the double ear band, so no need to go crazy with other colors here, just stick to the main color.

You’ll also need a set of double point needles, size 7, one stitch marker for the dome top, or 2 for the pointed top.

I have included photos to show how to connect the cast-on bottom edge to the mid-body of the hat to create the double thick ear band.
