Barley Sugar Twist is a slouchy beret worked in fingering weight yarn, perfect as a transitional accessory for autumn or spring.
It begins with a provisional cast-on and a double thickness brim to ensure the beret stays firmly in place. A pattern of cables and slipped stitches runs up towards the crown.
The beret is sized to fit an average woman’s head of approximately 22 ½” (57cm) circumference. The band measures 21” (53cm) while the circumference at the widest part of the hat is approximately 31” (79cm).
Pattern tension is 6 sts and 11 rows to 1” (2.5cm) measured over K2, P2 rib using 2.75mm (US 2) needles. This is the tension for the brim, which is the most important area for the hat to fit.
The pattern is charted, with written instructions given in an appendix. It is NOT necessary to work from charts to make this design.

You will need:
250 yards (230 m) fingering weight yarn
Small amount smooth waste fingering weight yarn for crochet cast-on
2.5mm (US 1.5) needles for knitting in the round (or one size smaller than size needed for tension, only needed to complete brim)
2.75mm (US 2) needles for knitting in the round, or size needed to achieve stated tension
Cable needle
3.25mm (D) crochet hook (or similar size, needed for provisional cast-on only)
1 stitch marker
Darning needle
Large dinner plate and beaker (for blocking)

You need to be able to:
Work a crochet chain provisional cast-on, work in the round, work cables with a cable needle (or without if you prefer, pattern describes with), work common increases and decreases
