While making a pair of clog slippers for my husband, I got to thinking about the chunky braid stitch that is used to make the cuff. So I started fiddling with some scrap yarn and came up with what I’m calling the “barrel stitch”. Doesn’t the fabric look like stacked rows of little barrels?

The Barrel Stitch Hat is loom knit on any 3/8” gauge loom (like the All N One loom). The beauty of the Barrel Stitch Hat is that you can knit it on any gauge loom with the appropriate weight yarn for that loom. The sample was knit on an All N One loom using 72 pegs. This hat used 250 yards of a worsted weight yarn. A full skein of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn Prints in the Morning Glow colorway was used in the sample.

The Barrel Stitch makes a nice dense fabric. This will make your hat nice as toasty for winter.

The pattern is suitable for a novice loom knitter.
