“They sang as first one barrel and then another rumbled to the dark opening and was pushed over into the cold water some feet below. Some were barrels really empty, some were tubs neatly packed with a dwarf each; but down they all went, one after another, with many a clash and a bump, thudding on top of ones below, smacking into the water, jostling against the walls of the tunnel, knocking into one another, and bobbing away down the current.”
—Tolkien, The Hobbit Chapter 9.

Skill-level: Intermediate, due to some cabling and sock construction; nothing too adventuresome, though.
Materials: 350-400 yards (320-365m) of sock yarn. The socks pictured are a size Medium and used approximately 370 yards of Achilles from Barking Dog Yarns in the color Woodruff.
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles (pattern is written for both DPN and magic loop knitters)
Tools: Cable needle, if required, tape measure, tapestry needle, scissors
Gauge: 32 stitches & 36 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm, measured in stockinette stitch.
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) sizes measure approximately 8(9,10,11) inches around, leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to fit and preference.
Sizing note: the sock fits as a stockinette pattern might, neither restrictive nor elastic.
