Knit a flexible, expandable shawl in an easy welted pattern! It is expansive and lace-free. It does not include a single yarn over. The yarn really makes this one; I used an excellent shark-themeed mini-skein set with the colors broken roughly in ⅓ to ⅔ ratios for wide blocks. You can choose rock colors to stick with the theme, but rocks come in a lot of colors—so that’s not really a limiter.

This shawl has minimalist material requirements. It’s knit on one circular needle, used to work flat.

The sample is knit with about 470 yards of Beach Bunny Yarns Ocean.

Materials:

  • 470+ yards of heavy fingering-weight yarn; the sample is shown in Beach Bunny Yarns Ocean from a mini-skein set.
  • 1 24”+ circular needle in US4/3.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:
Gauge is 18 sts and 36 rows over 4”/10cm of pattern as written, worked flat and blocked pretty severely. Gauge is really only important for yardage estimates here; if you’re flexible on that, aim for a fabric you like.

Measurements:
This shawl is 22.75”/58cm deep and 50.5”/128cm across, measured flat.

Because the welting pattern is so flexible, this measurement is a little blocking-dependent (and will also vary if you add or subtract repeats).
