A simple pencil case pattern for a beginner crocheter. It is a relatively small pencil case which fits 5–7 pens comfortably. This pattern is also a great stash buster — I used left over sock yarn to make my cases. I used about 25g or 1oz of sock yarn. I used a small hook relative to the yarn I used, so that the fabric is dense. You don’t want pencils and pens poking through the fabric. The tightness of the fabric produced is more important than the correct gauge. Don’t hesitate to go down a hook size or two depending on the sock yarn used. (Note that I didn’t line my pencil case. If you do, then it will make it sturdier and last longer.)

I was inspired to make this pattern by the crochet methods found on the Starling Handbag by Alice Merlino aka Futuregirl. The case is made in single crochet rounds, with some decreases near the top. It is finished with a zip. I’ve given two methods to start the case: one starts with a chain and single crochet around it, and the other starts with foundation single crochet. The pattern is easy to adjust. Simply add more stitches at the start to make the case wider and add more rows to make it deeper.
