Basilica is a reversible beanie, featuring a one-color brioche faux cable motif to add rich texture and the perfect amount of interest to an otherwise basic beanie! Master brioche increases and decreases to create this fun and fashionable accessory, inspired by the pointed arches of classic Neo-Gothic architecture.

Needles US 6 (4 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. US 7 double-pointed needles for crown decreases.
Tools 1 beginning of round stitch marker, plus 4 additional stitch markers; cable needle or double pointed needle for br4stdec; tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge 19.5 sts x 29 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, blocked.

Clarification for Setup round:
After the second marker is placed, you will knit until 1 stitch remains (in pattern, referred to as knit to last st). You will knit into the front and back of this last stitch. (increasing your cast on by 1 stitch)

BOR = beginning of round.
brk = brioche knit; knit the stitch and its corresponding yarn over.
brkyobrk = brioche knit, yarn over, brioche knit; brk1 leaving stitch on the left-hand needle, yarn over, then brk1 into same stitch - 2 stitch increase. The 3 stitches created will be worked separately in the following row (right side, dark color) using sl1yo, p1, sl1yo.
brk3tog = brioche knit 3 together; knit stitch with its yarn over, a single stitch and another stitch with its yarn over together - 2 stitch decrease slanting to the right.
brsssk = slip, slip, slip brioche knit slipped stitches together; slip 3 stitches knitwise 1 at a time (a stitch with its yarn over, a single stitch and another stitch with its yarn over) to the right needle. Insert the left needle into the slipped stitches and knit them together through the back loop - 2 stitch decrease slanting to the left.
brp = brioche purl; purl the stitch and its corresponding yarn over.
br4stdec = this decrease is worked over 5 sts: first, 3rd, and 5th are brk and 2nd and 4th are brp. Slip first and 2nd st separately knitwise, place 3rd st on a DPN or cable needle in front, knit 4th st, pass 2nd st over, transfer st to left needle, pass 5th st over, transfer st to right needle, pass first st over, place 3rd st on left needle and transfer st to left needle, pass 3rd st over, transfer finished 4 st decrease to right needle.
DPN = double-pointed needle.
k = knit.
kfb = knit in the front and back of stitch.
k2tog = knit 2 stitches together; 1 stitch decreased.
p = purl.
sl1yo = slip one yarn over; with yarn in front, slip stitch as if to purl, bring yarn over needle and in position to work the next stitch.
sk2p = slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 2 stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over the knit 2 together; double left-leaning decrease - 2 stitches decreased.
s2kp = slip 2 stitches knitwise at the same time, knit 1 stitch and pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch; centered double decrease - 2 stitches decreased. When working in the brioche section, 1 of the 2 slipped stitches will have a yarn over.
