Initially inspired by the shapes of bat and dragon wings and the random nature of organic beings, however, this pattern took on a larger meaning with the Australian wildfires.

Now, it represents a bat wrapping its wing around you to give you a big hug!

Why might a bat hug you? good question.

$2 from each sale of the bat hug shawlette will be donated to WIRES and other animal rescue shelters for the on-going animal rescue and relief effort.

While the fires are now under control, there will be on-going care costs for the animals affected by the fires. It is important we don’t forget about these animals care needs!

The design takes inspiration from the fact that like humans, each animal is unique and so will each bat hug. The Bat Hug utilises rolls from a 6-sided dice to determine which point section should be completed.

If you don’t want to do dice rolls, there is a table of numbers which you can use to determine the next number.

How to make it your own!

A simple design allows you to customise it and add your own stamp to it.

Each shawl will be unique due to the random dice roll which generates a unique section ordering each time.

But here are a few yarn tweaks you could make. Want to create a fade, go ahead, make each section a different colour, that would look cool. Create a marle with two 4-ply yarns held together, that would add some fun colour texture!

The Bat Hug Shawlette is perfect for using skeins you already have in your stash. Looks great in solid, speckled and even variegated yarns. It can even be adapted to other yarn weights!
