This hat is the knitting equivalent of the old Best Friend necklaces - you know the one where you either got the side that said “Be Fri” or “St End”? Only this time you pick your main color and contrasting color (“Be-Fri”) and then swap them for the version you give to your best friend (“St-End”). Best part - 2 skeins of most fingering weight yarn will get you your two best friend hats!

Of course you don’t need to knit two variations and can make it all in one color and it’s still a very cool slouchy ridged hat. Or you can knit it in one main color and lots of scraps for a colorful fun accessory. Have more than one best friend? Get one color for each friend and do a round robin - friend #1 gets colors 1 and 2, friend #2 gets colors 2 and 3, friend #3 gets colors 3 and 4, and so on to the last friend of the group who gets the last new color + color 1!

The sizes are very versatile due to the tightness of the brim and the slouchiness of the body of the hat. The small version will fit an adult as a standard beanie and the medium size will fit a child as an extra-slouchy hat. To determine the level of slouchiness you desire - the version with a white brim/stripes and black body is size large, the version in teals is the size small, all others are size medium.

For a one-color version you will need: 44g, (49g, 57g), For the two-color version you will need: MC 17g, (19g, 21g), CC 27g, (30g, 36g).

Samples in photos are knit in Knit Picks Stroll Tonal (black and white versions, maroon one-color, and light green one-color) and Malabrigo Yarn Mechita (green/teal version).
