The pattern for this beanie calls for 4 ply yarn in grey and turquoise, and double strands are used throughout. As a substitute, a single strand of chunky yarn could be used (also with a 6.00 mm hook; alternatively with a 5.50 mm hook if stitches are too loose) to give a similar result.

Cellophane placed inside the ears (before they are sewn to the beanie) makes them crinkle when moved.

The written crochet pattern (in US terms) provides instructions for three sizes: ‘newborn’ (approximately 0-2 months), ‘baby’ (approximately 2-6 months), and ‘toddler’ (approximately 6-18 months). Please note: sizes are only a guide; individual head size may vary.

Additional materials required are:

  • darning needle
  • cellophane (or other ‘crinkly-sounding’ plastic)
