This is a traditional crochet beanie pattern designed to achieve a lightweight, slouchy beanie look. Two complementing colors are used to create the look of vertical, textured stripes. Given that this project incorporates some advanced beginner/intermediate techniques and is worked with a lighter weight yarn, it is best suited for an intermediate crocheter or adventurous advanced beginner.

The pattern is written for the following fixed head circumferences 14 (16, 18, 19); 21 (22, 23, 24) inches. There are also instructions provided for custom sizing.

For reference, these sizes are based on Craft Yarn Council average head circumferences as follows: Baby (14” & 16”), Toddler (18”), Child (19”), Adult Female (21-23”), Adult Male (22-24”). However, head sizes may vary outside these ranges (my 8-month-old baby’s head was 18 inches, for example). To get the best fit, measure the head circumference of the person planning to wear the beanie and use the size that is closest to that circumference. If that circumference is not listed, size up or use custom sizing instructions to ensure a comfortable fit.

The design is intended to have approximately 1-2 inches of negative ease, to achieve a snug but comfortable fit for the beanie.

You will need Fingering/Sock Weight Yarn in two complementing colors (Color A, Color B). Sport weight yarn can be used if it meets gauge measurements.

Estimated Yardage:
14-19” circumferences: 150-200 yards of A, 110-170 yards of B.

21-24” circumferences: 250-300 yards of A, 200-250 yards of B.

Actual yardage will vary depending on your height gauge, slouch amount, and i-cord tension. These are estimates based on my and my testers’ samples, but you should be safe with at least 300 yards of each color.

Crochet Hook: Size 3.75 mm for the body, 3.25 mm for the i-cord, or size needed to meet gauge.

Find the hook that meets gauge for the body and then use a hook that is approximately 0.5-1.0mm smaller for the i-cord.
