This lace pattern was recommended by Mrs. Beeton for couvrettes (coverlets), opera caps, shawls and more. From 1870 Mrs. Beeton’s Guide to Embroidery, Crochet and Knitting, p.171, the doubling of the stitches in row 1 makes sliding the stitches across the knitting needle difficult. To help slide the stitches, I recommend 1 size larger than normal metal needles and casting on no more than about 19 stitches. If a wider item is needed, consider knitting in multiple strips to save stress on your hands.
There are 2 pattern rows with any odd number of stitches.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, YO, k2tog and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

36 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 19-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
