Beeton's Doily II
This doily pattern is from 1870 Mrs. Beeton’s Guide to Embroidery, Crochet and Knitting, pp.178-180. Once finished, Mrs. Beeton instructed knitters to embroider the “spots” but I left my doily plain to show the stitches. I modified the first 7 and the last 4 rounds. Mrs. Beeton’s pattern blunted the final tips of the 6 large diamonds, so I added a couple of rounds to add points. This doily isn’t particularly difficult to work but check your knitting to ensure your yarn overs and decreases are in the right places.
For my own comfort, I work the first 7 rounds as rows, then worked in the round. Feel free to start in-the-round work in any way you’re comfortable with.
The doily at gauge is 8.25 inches in diameter without an edging.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, YO, k2tog, k3tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
