Beginner Chunky Socks
By Naomi Fox
I am Naomi, a professional knitting teacher, who has taught almost 400 classes and workshops. Through my experience teaching complete beginners, I have gained an insight into what type of patterns are popular and how much direction to give in these patterns. This sock pattern is written specifically for the keen beginner, using step by step instructions, trouble shooting tips and video tutorials.
The only stitches you will need to know are knit and purl for this sock, plus knit 2 together for the toe. There is a video tutorial for all of these included in the pattern.
A lot of beginner shy away from knitting socks because they are usually knit in the round on circular needles. I have written this pattern so that it can be knit flat on straight needles and seamed up using a flat seam.
You can of course knit these socks in the round too if you have learnt that skill, just cast on then join in the round as you normally would and continue the socks in that way.
There is no heel to knit, the sock is a simple tube structure, which once on your foot will curve naturally around your heel. I have used a Worsted weight yarn, so they knit up much more quickly that traditional sock yarn.
I used Stylecraft Fusion Chunky in “lime” and “rust” a 100% acrylic yarn available from www.woolwarehouse.co.uk. This yarn is 200m per 100g. You can use any brand of yarn with the same meterage per 100g as a substitute.
These socks are perfect welly, boot socks or bed socks. If you have any questions please contact me via my website contact form at www.naominoah.bigcartel.com
