Beginner Super Chunky Cardigan
Easy chunky cardigan for Beginners by Naomi Fox
I am Naomi, a professional knitting teacher, who has taught almost 400 in person classes and workshops in the U.K. Through my experience of teaching complete beginners, I have gained an insight into what type of patterns are popular and how much direction to give in these patterns. This cardigan pattern is written specifically for the keen beginner, using step by step instructions, trouble shooting tips and video tutorials.
The only stitches you will need to know are knit and purl for this garment, plus knit 2 together for the sleeve cuffs. There is a video tutorial for all of these stitches included in the pattern. This cardigan includes no shaping , and is constructed using just rectangles seamed together.
It is an oversized boxy cardigan with 8 inches of positive ease, and balloon sleeves.
A lot of beginner shy away from knitting jumpers and cardigans because they include shaping increases, decreases and terminology which can be confusing to the inexperienced knitter. I have written this pattern especially for the novice knitter, so it is knit flat on straight needles and seamed up using an invisible seam.
Yarn – Super Chunky weight yarn with approximately 68m per 100g. I used Stylecraft Merry Go Round XL in colour “Bombay Mix”
Sizes Small / Medium / Large - 630 g : 430m /680 g: 463m/ 730 g : 497m
Needles – 12 mm straight needles at least 38cm long
Tapestry needle and large buttons/ toggles
Sizing
As this is an oversized garment you may want to choose the size below your bust measurement for a less baggy fit. This garment has a positive ease bust of 8 inches, which means the measurement of the finished garment is 8 inches larger than the bust measurement below e.g if you knit the large size the actual finished bust measurement will be 52 inches creating a baggy oversized effect.
To find your size match your actual bust size to the bust measurements below. If you fall in between two sizes, you can choose the size above or below depending on how baggy you want your cardigan.
Small – 32 inch bust ( finished bust 40 inch)
Medium – 38 inch bust ( finished bust 46 inch)
Large – 44 inch bust ( finished bust 52 inch)
Sleeve length for all sizes is 16 inches and the garment length is 19/20/21 inches. It is a slightly cropped cardigan. If you want to increase the length, instead of knitting the front section and back to a total of 50/52/54 rows plus rib cuff, add another 10 rows. To do this you will need 200g/136 metres of extra yarn for the Large size and slightly less for the medium and small size (buy 2 x 100g balls and you’ll have some left over)
