Belisama – Sock Yarn Stashbuster

The skirt was extreme fun to make. It is made of asymmetrical swirled tetragons separated by braids with nice upper and lower finishings. As beautiful it is as a stash buster, using just one or two different yarns with harmonious or strongly contrasting color flows will certainly look great as well and catch the eyes.

You can work this skirt in any size—from a toddler to any adult.

The pattern contains a lot of extra information with charts, tables, photo tutorials for various techniques used, schematics, close-up photos, as well as construction variations—including instructions on how to make the skirt shorter and still preserve the flared look (or how not to preserve it, if you want the skirt more straight). There are several ways to work this garment depending on whether you prefer joining as you go or seaming at the end. I have given my method (a mixture of the two), but also instructed for knitters who don’t like seaming. I have elaborated a bit on the different outcomes, choice of yarn and color flow as well, if it interests you.

Pattern files include

  • written instructions,
  • charted instructions,
  • schematics,
  • tables,
  • photo tutorials with techniques,
  • close-up photos,
  • instructions for variations (shorter skirt, less to almost no seaming).

What you will learn (if not already familiar with it):

  • to work asymmetrical swirled tetragons,
  • to work beautiful two-colored braids to accentuate a garment,
  • to work a two-colored lace finishing in the round,
  • to work a beautiful two-colored and stretchy cuff in the round for the waist/hip,
  • to make blind seams as well as to join pieces as you go.

Choice of Yarn

Any sock yarn will do (including light fingering yarn) and I have given just a few of the possible choices above. If you want the colors to change within the tetragons, choose a yarn with a short color repeat. I have given the yarns (and their colors) I have used for each area of the skirt in the pattern.

For the braids and the finishings, I have used an old stash of black DROPS Fabel and of dark red Austermann Step classic (with Aloe vera and Jojoba oil). Just use any yarn of approx. sock yarn weight.

Sizes and Usage

Depending on the exact sock yarn(s) of your choice, the usage slightly differs. If I calculate with the heaviest of all my samples, I come up with the following example usages for the most common sizes (please allow for a bit of extra yarn nonetheless):
