Bereket is a beautiful, abstract concept in the Kazakh language. It has a combined meaning of ‘abundance’ and ‘blessing’. It’s not about the abundance of material possessions but more about the feeling of abundance in our hearts. It’s about making the most of what we have and being grateful and generous. The silhouette of the sweater evokes abundance and warmth, while the stitch pattern is reminiscent of the bounty of harvest.

Knitting level: Intermediate

Skills required: Long-Tail cast on, making increases and decreases, German Short Rows, making bobbles, knitting flat and in the round, picking up sts, binding off sts in rib pattern

Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4)(5, 6, 7), the sample shown is Size 2, modeled on a person with 34”/86.5cm chest circumference and 5’2”/157.5cm height

Finished measurements: 35 (41, 47, 53)(60, 66, 72)“ /
89 (104, 119.5, 134.5)(152.5, 167.5, 183) cm around hem

Yarn: Moondrake Cormo Sport, sport weight, 100% non-superwash Cormo, 328 yards per 100g, the sample was knit in Toffee colorway.

Yardage: 1445 (1600, 1840, 2005)(2305, 2475, 2655) yards /
1320 (1460, 1680, 1835)(2105, 2260, 2425) meters

Gauge: 22 sts x 34 rows in 4”/10 cm in stockinette after wet-blocking

Needles:

  • 16 “/40 cm and 32”/80 cm circular needles in size needed to obtain gauge (recommended size is US 4 /3.50 mm)
  • a spare DPN one size smaller than the gauge needle (recommended size is US 3 / 3.25 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, waste yarn

Construction: This is an oversized cropped sweater that is worked sideways. The top begins at the right cuff and is knit in one piece to the left cuff. Stitches are picked up around the neckband and hem to work ribbed trims.

Choosing yarn: The yarn I used in the sample is 100% non-superwash wool in sport weight. It feels soft, yet it has a lot of structure and memory. If you want to substitute yarn, I’d recommend a non-superwash wool or blend with similar characteristics.

Choosing a size: If your bust cup size is A-C, please select a size based on your full chest circumference. If your bust cup size is D and above, please select a size based on your upper chest measurement (see Schematic on Page 4). If you’re between sizes, choose the smaller size.
