Fashion icon and septuagenarian Bernie Sanders (also a prominent US Senator, I’m told) donned the must-have item of 2021: Bernie Mitts. While his were made by VT resident Jen Ellis by upcycling old sweaters, you can make your own with worsted weight wool. This pattern includes the unique palm-side of the mitt, a distinct pattern of its own.

Bernie Mitts are knit flat, from cuff to cuff. The thumb is then attached, seams sewn, and ends woven in. The thumb construction follows the same logic as a one-row buttonhole, but is worked over 2 rows to allow for the girth of a thumb. This pattern includes colorwork charts for all parts of the mittens, including the lesser-seen palm-side of the mittens.
