One thing became apparent after President Joe Biden’s Inauguration Ceremony on January 20th, 2021 - humorous memes are a universal language! It didn’t take long for a photograph of Senator Bernie Sanders to take over the internet. Wearing the same jacket he always wears and upcycled mittens created by Jen Ellis, Bernie’s authenticity was heard loud and clear around the world - and was met with a slew of photoshopped memes of him in some of the most interesting places. While hats are not typically worn during formal ceremonies as a sign of respect, the knitters of the world can certainly all agree … Bernie Needs a Hat!

While this hat was inspired by mittens made from an upcycled sweater, I chose to simplify the colorwork pattern. My goal was to create a pattern that could be more accessible to newer knitters - a wonderful introduction to the Fair Isle style of knitting. With only 2 colors worked per round and no more than 3 stitches between color changes, the floats from the carried yarn are kept short. Knitters who are new to the technique will find colorwork knitting as enjoyable as any Bernie meme.

The pattern includes 2 versions: 3-Colors and 4-Colors, and makes a fabulous stash-busting project!
