This pattern is inspired by the legendary Bernie Sanders’ mittens that he wore to the 2021 Inauguration. They are cozy and warm and feature a relatively simple colorwork pattern using four different colors.

Bernie’s original mittens were created by Jen Ellis, a school teacher from Vermont, out of upcycled wool sweaters. In the spirit of upcycling, feel free to use any bits of scrap yarn you have left over for this project.

Since this pattern is free, please consider supporting some of the causes that Bernie supports, such as Meals on Wheels.
