Betty the Beluga is part of project Arctic. In Project Arctic I crochet different animals that live on or around the poles. They may live on the ice, in the air or in the water. What makes those animals special, is that many of them have a very different appearance when they’re young compared to when they are grown up. And that is very nice to crochet!

Beluga’s are also know as ‘white wales’. They live in the Arctic waters all the way from Hudson Bay to the Bering Sea. The name Beluga is derived from the Russian word for white and they are really unique creatures with their white skin, thick head and without a fin on the back as regular dolphins have.

Although the young beluga’s have a greyish look, the adults are white. However, they are able to slightly change the tone of their skin to avoid being seen by predators.

Size
The beluga is about 25 cm long, 20 cm wide and 9 cm high.
