This is a pattern for a knit shawl that features two stitches that come to us from Japan. The long intricate border stitch makes quite a statement. Both stitches are interesting and fun to knit. Combined, they make a beautiful shawl. The stitches, although they are Japanese, are easily learned by American knitters, especially those who love knitting lace. All symbols used are the ones familiar to Western knitters. Contained within the pattern are instructions for an optional crocheted edging.

The cable in the pattern is a mock cable, so no cable needle is required.

Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of lace knitting).

The two stitches are both charted and written out line by line.

This pattern was expertly test knitted by Gay Fehr, who can be contacted at grf1956@gmail.com. The yarn used in the sample is Lorna’s Laces Sportmate in colorway Galena.
