This ribbed cowl is worked in multiple directions. First, the center section is knit as a long rectangle and the cast-on and bind-off edges are joined together to form a ring. Then, stitches are picked up around each edge and worked outward to create the top and bottom. With stitches picked up at a rate of 1 stitch for each row of the center band, this creates a slight flare as the ribbed edge is worked outward, to better fit around the shoulders.
