The Birch Hat is a good introduction to stranded colorwork. There are just 2 colors used, and the option to catch floats or forgo catching floats. The pattern is worked over 6 stitches, and includes color charts for both the main pattern as well as the decreases.

190 yards/80g worsted weight yarn in 2 colors:
Color A = main color, approx. 137 yards/55g (shown in blue, right)
Color B = secondary color, approx. 53 yards/25g (shown in white, right)
