Winters in Lyon are chilly and windy, and the city’s location at the meeting point of the Saône and Rhône rivers—nestled between the Alps and the Massif Central—makes it feel even brisker. I wanted to create a cozy, chunky scarf to keep me warm through Lyon’s winter without feeling too heavy.

The Birthday Cake Scarf is just the thing! It’s a quick and enjoyable project you can complete in just a few days. Crocheted in the Camel Stitch, it has a beautiful knitted look with added texture.

For this project, I chose two playful yarns: Gepard Puno in Color 10 and a complementary thread, Rico Design Make It Tweed in Rainbow. Holding them together as I worked reminded me of a birthday cake sprinkled with rainbow confetti, which is how this scarf got its cheerful name!

This scarf can be crocheted using any yarn and gauge—you just need to adjust the number of foundation chain stitches and rows to suit your preferences!
