This pattern is written in the tradition of Shetland lace while following today’s conveniences. I use 40” circular needles to do these shawls as opposed to the “pins” used by the traditional Shetlanders. The pattern is written in chart form using only a few symbols. The traditional shawls were knitted in garter stitch with yarn overs, single and double decreases. There were little or no purls in these shawls! The four sides are knitted together in the border with the center square being picked up afterward and knitted back and forth. The edging is done first in a continuous piece with the border stitches being picked up from there. The numbers can be intimidating but with the frequent use of stitch markers, mistakes are controllable. I even include MY way of making stitch markers in the instructions!

This yarn was my own handspun and a 2 ply. It measured 550 yards per ounce and took only 3 ounces to finish it. Your mileage may vary.

Unfortunately I have no more pictures of this shawl. It is now gone and I have no way of getting more photos. It did win 1st in the FL Fiber Conference for Spinning a yarn for a Project …. and it was lovely. But I have no access to it any longer.

When printing this pattern, please note that pages AFTER page 6 are printed on legal size paper. It makes reading the pattern much easier.
