Despite my personal dislike of spiders, they are pretty much required for Halloween, so of course I had to make one! Black Widow is pretty easy to make - the Head/Thorax/Abdomen section is knit in one piece, in the round on 3.5 mm dpns, with eyes and any patterns duplicate stitched on as we go along. The mandibles and legs are knit using i-cord. For the mandibles, we just knit a couple of rows before binding off and sewing on. The legs need longer lengths of i-cord, and we insert floristry wire into them before sewing them to the thorax to provide more stability and flexibility.

The finished spider is about 20cm long (from the tip of his head to the bottom of his abdomen), not including legs or any i-cord spider silk you might knit to hang him up with. You’ll need about 50g of black DK yarn to make him, along with such scrap red yarn to duplicate stitch on the eyes and hourglass pattern. Of course, gauge isn’t super important for this project and you can substitute for a different weight to make a smaller or bigger spider. The only other special equipment you’ll need is florist’s wire for the legs, which is readily available via Amazon. Of course, you can leave this out, but then your spiders legs will be floppy and hard to position. Skills required:
