2014 Pattern Update: Black Willow is back!! The completely revamped tech edited pattern includes modeled pictures fully written row by row directions and full charts.

This is a pattern I designed based on the black willow tree. I was inspired by a beautiful black willow tree while undergoing treatment this Fall. My eye was drawn to the richness of the bark and the variegation of depth. I added glass beads for an accent and a porcelain leaf button to carry theme. It is knit in Estelle’s organic 100% cotton yarn. The pattern includes written directions for both the cowl and full length scarf. The beading is optional.

Finished Measurements:
Cowl – 26”/ 66cm long by 6”/ 15cm wide.
Scarf – 60-78”/ 152.5-198cm long by 6”/ 15cm wide.

Materials Cowl (Scarf):
2 (5) Skeins Aran Weight Yarn
(shown in Estelle Cloud Cotton – 100% organic cotton; 164 yards/ 150 meters; 100 grams/ 3.53 ounces)
US 9/ cm needles
1: 1.5”/ 4cm button (handmade recycled clay button shown)
Cable needle
Optional:
120 (360) Japanese seed beads size 3/0
Steel crochet hook to fit beads

Gauge:
24 sts and 24 rows over 4”/ 10cm in pattern stitch.

Even though in testing the pattern only 1 ball was required (cowl), when I knit it again, I came up short. 1 ball should be sufficient, but since it uses the entire ball and there is some variation in skein length, the pattern now calls for 2.
