The Bonnet is inspired by classic knit baby ‘helmets’, graded to adult/ universal sizing. Like helmets, the bonnet is designed to be form-fitting, designed with negative ease and crown shaping. Decreases on the crown of the bonnet create a distinctive X-motif. This, along with the I-cord edging, makes for a unique spin on a traditional design.

The name ‘Blake’ is a nod to William Blake, author of the poem, ‘The Lamb’. This references Way 2 of the pattern, which gives instructions for how to add lamb ears to the body of the bonnet.

The bonnet is initially worked flat, before joining to work in the round to work the crown shaping. An attached I-cord embellishment is then knit to create the bonnet’s edging and ties.

For Way 2, the lamb ears are worked flat in double knit stockinette. Decreases are then worked to taper the ear. This is repeated once more for the second ear.

As the bonnet is negative ease, blocking is integral to the finishing process. Instructions for this, and how to assemble Way 2, are given.
