This here is a super simple little pattern but by god am I having fun with it! I´ve been meaning to do some experiments with 3 colour mosaic crochet for ages and this here is my first attempt.

I’ve been waiting my whole life for the opportunity to start of a speech like this: Webster’s Dictionary defines the meaning of love, no I mean block party, as ‘a party in which many members of a single community congregate, either to observe an event of some importance or simply for mutual solidarity and enjoyment.’ Even if this dictionary experience didn´t evolve actual paper pages and was indeed just Wikipedia, it was a happy moment. Its the little things in life that matter, right!

And the fact that we can all have a blockparty together while we work on our projects worldwide as a sign of ‘mutual solidarity and enjoyment’, well that´s just the icing on the cake innit. Incidentally it´s also my 2024 birthday party pattern, so this is on all levels just a slam dunk! I hope you guys have as much fun with this one as I am, the colour play possibilities are endless! Such fun, such fun!

also DO REMEMBER I have my annual birthday Sale going now, from February 21st and until the end of this month. 43% discount on all the patterns in my Ravelry shop, no code needed!

Yarn:
You can use any yarn you like for this pattern and a hook that suits your yarn.

I´m working on my cushion cover with fingering weight and sport weight stash, hook 2.5 mm.

You will need at least 3 colours, but this pattern is ideal for stash busting too, since you only need to always work 2 rows in each colour.

For the Blockparty cushion shown here, which measures 50 x 50 cm in size you will need 3 x 100 g skeins in fingering weight yarn.

Hooks:

Use hooks that suit your yarn, I used a 2.5 mm hook for the suggested fingering weight yarn I used here.

Gauge:
Approx. 30 ST & 30 rows = 10 cm (4 inches)
Using recommended yarn and a 2.5 mm hook in this pattern.

Abbreviations (US terms):
ST = stitch/stitches
SS = slip stitch
CH = chain stitch
SC = single crochet
XDC = extended double crochet

Blockparty is a simple little 3 colour mosaic pattern that is worked in a 8 ST repeat, so you can use this to make a project in any size you like. For example, cushions, rugs, purses and blankets. The pattern can be worked both flat and in the round.
Colours

You will need at least three colours and I recommend using contrasting colours. Colour B is the main colour, but only in the sense that the chart starts and ends with colour B, so you could say that it makes up the main background colour. In the pattern itself, all 3 colours are main colours really. You can work the Blockparty pattern with only 3 colours and always repeat those, but you can also go crazy and just work a 2 rows block with each colour and then switch it up. This is therefore perfect for using up your stash and even some scraps!

This pattern is a play on the traditional two-coloured mosaic crochet technique. The only difference is that I mix it up a bit and am using 3 colours now. The pattern comes both with a user-friendly chart as well as written instructions for how to work the pattern both flat and in the round.
If lefthanded, you can follow the chart from left to right no problem, it´ll look the same.

3 colour Mosaic Crochet

As in traditional two coloured mosaic crochet, each row is worked with only one colour at a time. I recommend always using contrasting colours for A, B & C, that way the patterns pop more.
All single crochet stitches are worked in the back loop of a stitch.
All extended double crochet stitches are worked in the front loop of a stitch 2 rows below the one you would normally crochet into. That is, in the corresponding stitch right below the stitch you would normally crochet into, two rows down, where you worked with the same colour as you’re doing your XDC row with.
For example, the extended double crochet stitches from Row 4 are worked into stitches in Row 1, XDC stitches from Row 6 are worked into stitches in Row 3, etc.

When working the extended double crochet stitches, you just yarn over and insert your hook from below in the front loop of the corresponding stitch below and then work a normal XDC in that stitch. This way you get this unique mosaic pattern. Because the mosaic pattern is worked this way, always from the front side, the pattern only appears on front side of the afghan, and the back side is striped.

Extended double crochet
The extended double crochet stitch is sort of the middle ground between a double crochet and a treble.
You only yarn over once, but after inserting your hook into the loop your working into and pulling your yarn up, then there’s one extra step there.
You now should have 3 loops up on your hook. Instead of going through 2 and then 2 like when working a normal DC, you first go through just 1, then 2 and again 2 to finish.
