Have you ever met bluebird in poetry, songs and fairytales? I find it to be a very special inspiration for hopes and dreams, of longing for happiness and love. Seeing blue birds in real life is such a marvellous experience, be they mountain bluebirds, bluejays or blue tits, in the nature around us. I never tire of that.
I see a bird in the palm of mittens as a very personal touch, like it’s mine and only mine, not for show but for treasuring and keeping safe. Just like a wish. Illusion or Shadow knitting adds even more mystery to the whole idea as the best angle to actually see the bird is if I lift my hand up as if to let it fly away.

These mittens feature berries on the cuff and arched thumb gussets along the bird illusion in the palm.

These mittens are knitted with two fingering or sport weight yarns in highly contrasting colours. The colour designation for the background and bird is meant to be the same in both mittens, but I quite like the idea of a pair in reversed colours, like night and day.

This is a companion pattern to my Blackbird hat.
