Bluegrass Shawl is a fun stashbusting brioche project that blends easy knitting with big visual payoff. Knit on the bias in plush two color brioche, it has a cozy texture and relaxed flow while keeping the stitch count low and manageable.
It’s designed for playing with color. Mix minis, leftovers, and treasured skeins and watch them shift across the fabric. By changing colors at the ends of brioche sections, shades layer and soften into each other so even very different yarns blend naturally.
Loose ends are intentionally left along one edge and become the fringe. Prefer a cleaner look? Just weave them in instead.
Design Details
Knitting on the bias gives Bluegrass its fluid drape and diagonal movement. The reversible brioche fabric shows off both colors beautifully and makes the shawl easy to throw on without worrying about the “right side.”
Pattern Highlights
- Low stitch count relaxing knit
- Made for minis and stash yarn
- Fully reversible fabric
- Adjustable length
- Optional fringe finish
- Includes a full brioche video class and knit-along tutorials
Construction Overview
Bluegrass begins at one tip and grows lengthwise on the bias into a generous wrap.
The shawl is worked flat using two color brioche with a single increase and decrease shaping the piece. Color changes are added at the end of brioche repeats and you can continue until you reach your preferred size or run out of yarn.
An i-cord cast on, i-cord edging, and i-cord bind off create neat finished edges.
Yarn Notes
Bluegrass is made for stashbusting.
Mini skeins, leftovers, and single skeins all work beautifully in this design. Variegated yarns create movement across the fabric while tonals and solids highlight the brioche texture. Because brioche naturally marls the two colors together, even unexpected pairings soften and work together once knitted.

90% merino / 10% nylon
87 yds (80 m) per 20 g mini
If this is your first brioche project, choose high contrast colors so the stitches are easy to read.
Brioche Made Simple
If you’ve been wanting to try brioche, this is a great place to start. The stitch pattern stays consistent throughout the entire shawl so you can learn it as you knit and quickly recognize the stitches.
Included Video Tutorials:
- 45 minute Learn to Brioche class
- Row by row knit along repeat tutorial
- Special stitch tutorials in both continental and English styles
Needles & Gauge
US 6 (4.00 mm) 16–32” circular needle
US 7 (4.50 mm) 16–32” circular needle
We like the drape achieved on US 6 and do not find a gauge swatch necessary for this project. If you knit loosely, consider going down a needle size to preserve yardage.
Yardage Requirements
Approx. 350 g fingering weight yarn
Approx. 1400 yds (1280 m)
Finished Measurements
After blocking:
Length: 94” / 239 cm
Width: 17–18” / 43–46 cm
Before blocking the shawl appears shorter and wider due to brioche elasticity. Wet blocking lengthwise stretches the shawl and narrows it into its final shape.
We recommend wet blocking for the intended finished size and drape.
