Board Game Token Holder
My partner and I play a lot of Scythe. Like, a lot. At first, we used cereal bowls to hold the game tokens, but 1) we didn’t have enough bowls to separate the tokens, so we had to fish out the correct one each time, and 2) we ran out of bowls for actual cereal. So I designed a board game token holder that:
- Allows you to separate different types of tokens
- Makes it easy to find the right token, even across the table
- Keeps tokens separate, even if the holder is jostled.
It’s been a game-changer (pun intended) so I wanted to share!
Difficulty
Medium. None of the stitches are complex in themselves, but it helps to have a general idea of how your stitches will contribute to the overall effect.
Stitches
- Sl st: slip stitch
- Sc: single crochet (U.S. terminology)
- Dc: double crochet (U.S. terminology)
- Sc-flo: single crochet, front loop only
- Sc-blo: single crochet, back loop only
- Dc-flo: double crochet, front loop only
Notes
The pattern uses five colors: the base yarn color, a neutral color like grey; and four token yarn colors which match the game tokens. For the Scythe holder, I used blue, brown, gold and grey for oil, wood, honey, and metal.
- The pattern can be adapted to whatever game and token size you’re using, so there’s no specific gauge. I’ve used an H hook (5.00 mm) but you can use any hook that gives a sturdy, tight fit.
- I’ve written the instructions for four token types, but you can easily adapt it to different numbers/sizes.
- This pattern will test your yarn management skills! Be sure to detangle frequently.
I’m offering this pattern for free, but if you enjoyed it, please consider making a small donation to Crips for eSims for Gaza, an initiative where disabled people (such as yours truly) raise money to send eSims to Gaza.
