Waffle stitch is a fun, classic stitch. It involves both front and back post double crochet, which keeps the work interesting, but the pattern of stitch is simple enough that one doesn’t need to pay too much attention to keep it going. While there are lots of waffle stitch hat patterns out there, most do not do the shaping in the pattern stitch. This hat pattern is worked from the bottom up, includes a built in folded brim, and decreases in pattern at the top. Construction begins with foundation double crochet (instructions included), and the hat includes a built in, folded brim.

Since post stitch patterns tend to be rather thick, and sometimes stiff, I’ve used fingering weight yarn in this pattern, with a size G hook to create a fabric that is warm, but wearable, and has a nice drape. Instructions are provided in three sizes (infant, child, and adult). I love that the look of waffle stitch is decidedly unisex, and, while textured, is general enough that it can serve as a nice backdrop for variegated yarns.
