Bowtie Entrelac Beanie
This pattern I have designed based off of the infamous Entrelac Beanie which can be found on various youtube tutorials or in the “Entrelac2: New Techniques for Entrelac Knitting” book. The final result of this beanie is a cute slouchie effect, with bowties for a femme feel. I listed this as a unisex pattern as femme designs are not restricted to any gender, and the color scheme you choose heavily impacts the design.
Fear not though, I do describe the entire entrelac knitting process if you have never knitted an entrelac beanie before! I have done my best to make this pattern as beginner friendly as possible. What makes this pattern unique is the “bowtie” motif I spent hours finalising.
This pattern does not have an explicit size because it is so easily modifiable to any sized head you like. I describe how to determine the gauge needed within the pattern. It is done without ease. It also does not have an explicit yarn requirement as you can do this with any sized yarn, and the pattern still works. I HEAVILY recommend knitting a gauge swatch to start so that you know how many cm per stitch you have to start with. The swatch can be done in garter or rib stitch, as that is the portion of the hat that truly touches the head.
I do recommend reducing your initial measurement by about 4 cm (or about 1.5 inches) for a better fit. However, you can also place an elastic band in the folded headband, or string elastic thread throughout the ribbed stitches on the inside if it comes out too loose.
This pattern does need to be done with circular knitting needles, ideally interchangeable, but you can use DPNs if you’re feeling adventurous or are more comfortable with DPNs. Due to this being knitted in the round, flat needles will not work.
I have successfully knitted this beanie with only 1 skein of yarn in various weights. But if you use fingering weight/lace weight yarn, you may need 2 skeins.
I have listed this pattern as free because entrelac is a very old technique, and I simply modified the individual block to create the bowtie effect. Further patterns that are purely my creation, I may list for a price. But this one? Will always be free!!!
