An afternoon hike to explore a box canyon is a classic southwestern adventure.

Box canyons are natural rock canyons that are open at only one end. Their unique geologic features include playful echo walls, beautiful swirling layers of sandstone, and interesting ledges to sit on and crochet a while.

This laid-back blanket uses four colors to emulate the rock layers and echoing effect of a box canyon.

Simple stitches put the focus on the color palette and the modern southwestern geometric pattern. Each section of color is worked from its own ball of yarn in the intarsia crochet style.

Size: About 45” by 66” 114-168 cm with worsted weight yarn and a 4 mm hook

Yarn and Hook: Either dk weight (light) yarn or worsted weight (medium) yarn is recommended for this pattern. Use the hook size recommended on the yarn label. The sample blankets used worsted weight yarn and a 4 mm hook.

Choose 4 colors of yarn. Try two colors that are in the same color family (like gold and orange, or warm colors) and two colors that are in a different color family (like blue and light blue, or cool colors). See photos of more color palette examples on the last page of the pattern.

The sample blanket used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn, worsted weight (medium) and a 4 mm hook. 100% mercerized cotton, 186 yards 170m per 100g ball

Main color (MC): Goldenrod gold 5 balls 930 yards 850 m
Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Heatwave orange 5 balls 930 yards 850 m
Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Denim blue 4 balls 744 yards 680 m
Contrast Color 3 (CC3): Sky light blue 4 balls 744 yards 680 m

This blanket is made using the intarsia crochet method where we crochet using a separate ball of yarn for each section of color. Intarsia crochet creates a “clean” look because yarn is not carried across a section of a different color. The blanket is made with double crochet stitches in US terms.
