This pattern creates a lovely highly-textured scarf with alternating vertical ridges and lacy columns. It is suitable for either a man or a woman depending entirely on the look of the bulky yarn you choose.

Knitting is a simple one-row repeat of the Shawl Brioche Variation Stitch from Nancy Marchant’s BriocheStitch.com website. Skip past the Shawl Brioche Stitch instructions to the Shawl Brioche Variation Stitch instructions. The stitch is completely reversible.

This stitch is a good choice for adding some give to inelastic yarn.

One Row Scarf is very similar. The main difference is that the brioche stitches are purled and the alternate stitches are knit. The resulting fabric appears to be the same. You might try this alternate pattern if you prefer executing BRP over BRK stitches.

Supplies:
approximately 310 yards of chunky yarn for 6” x 74” size
#10 US (6 mm) knitting needles,
or
162 grams of worsted weight yarn for 7” x 55” size on #9 US (5.5 mm) knitting needles,
darning needle to weave ends

Instructions:
1) Cast on 33 stitches (chunky) or 39 stitches (worsted)using your favorite method. I used a provisional cast on for the model but will use a crochet cast on in the future.
Note: The setup rows will reduce your stitch count for most of the scarf from 33 to 22 for chunky (39 to 26 for worsted) because every second and third stitch are K2tog.
2) Follow the stitch pattern on Nancy’s website until you reach the length you want.
3) Cast off
4) Weave ends
