Brioche It! : A super beginner two-color brioche cowl, knit completely in the round, with 2 styles available.
I originally designed this cowl for my Beginner Brioche class, and expanded it a bit to publish this pattern. If you are signed up for either of my Beginner Brioche classes at DFW Fiber Fest next week, you do NOT need to purchase this pattern.
Size Notes:
The sizes noted for this cowl represent the fit. So the close-fitting cowl is meant to be a bit tighter around the neck and shorter in depth, while the loose-fitting cowl will have a wider circumference, have more drape and be a bit longer in depth. See below for the sizes of my cowl and corresponding measurements. This cowl is very easy to modify by adding or omitting stitches, and knitting to your desired length.
Yarn Notes:
If this is your very first time knitting two-color brioche, I highly recommend using solid, semi-solid or tonal yarns for both MC and CC, and choosing yarns with very high contrast. If you would like to substitute yarn or modify your cowl, please note that yardage / meterage amounts may differ.
See the last photos here of the yarn I used for both my samples in skein form!
Skill level:
Beginner brioche friendly!! Two-color brioche knit in the round is a fantastic way to learn this fascinating technique.
Techniques used:
Twisted German Cast On, knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), sl1yo, brioche purl (brp), knitting in the round, Elastic Bind Off.

Construction Notes:
This cowl is knit in the round, starting with a one-color super stretchy cast on. Knitting two-color brioche in the round is a fantastic way to learn this technique because you are only ever doing one thing depending on the yarn you’re using. For instance, when working with your Main Color yarn, you’ll work a “brioche knit” round. When working with your Contrast Color yarn, you’ll work a “brioche purl” round. You will continue working two-color brioche in the round until you reach around 9 (11)’’ / 23 (28) cm, or your desired length. Then you will bind off using a one-color super stretchy bind off technique. Stretchy cast ons and bind offs are SO important to help the brioche fabric to stretch!
Loose style cowl: For this style, I used 5 mini skeins in a gradient of pink hues. I simply worked with 1 skein for a certain number of rounds (included in pattern) of each color, keeping the CC yarn the same throughout. This created beautiful gradient stripes, but feel free to use contrasting colors for a more defined design! Create your own cowl by working stripes of different widths and colors.
This cowl is so easy to wear over any outfit! Just throw it on and your’e ready to go with a fabulous accessory!
I truly hope you enjoy brioche knitting!
